The ability for the shoulders blades to slide towards (retraction) and away from each other (protraction) becomes challenging when tight neck and upper back muscles bind together and inhibit these movement patterns. For many 50+ students, this area of the upper body can become locked and frozen into place where even a good massage will not be able to loosen it up! Years of bad posture and static positioning contribute to this immobility and it takes time and effort to create freedom of movement once again. From my personal experience with this issue, I had to work at bringing retraction and protraction movements back into my shoulders from all the computer work I did over the years. Here are two movements patterns that helped! Give them a try!
